Key conclusions from the LGA conference

Last week's LGA conference in Birmingham showed a marked difference in tone by ministers towards the sector, evidence of which was having a serving prime minister address the association for the first time in its history. There are three main messages to be drawn from what must be regarded as a successful event, and a promising start for the new chairman, Sir Merrick Cockell. The first is that DCLG ministers appeared to be making a real effort with the sector. Last year, at the 2010 LGA conference, the newspapers were full of the planted 'non jobs' story.
