Charge on carrier bags becomes law in October

London Councils has welcomed the news that supermarkets must charge 5p for plastic carrier bags, after plans were given the-final go-ahead by Parliament. Following approval in the House of Lords, all stores will have to charge for plastic bags from 5 October onwards 'Government figures show that carrier bags cost taxpayers in England about £10m every year to clean up, and the environmental impact in London can be seen in our parks and streets,' said chair of London Councils' transport and environment committee, Cllr Julian Bell.
