Staffordshire County Council has taken a provocative approach to its latest recruitment campaign, asking potential applicants whether they're focused on 'guarding traditions or changing the landscape?' The local authority is radically changing its approach to learning and skills and is looking for people who can drive forward progress in an environment that's a world away from the traditional council setting. As one of its adverts says, 'if you're daunted by a challenge, it's probably not the role for you'. Last year Staffordshire set up a joint venture company with Capita called Entrust, which is now responsible for many of the front line activities with schools previously undertaken directly by the council, from grounds maintenance to school improvement. The focus of the in-house team has therefore changed to that of enabler and champion to ensure schools improve and children are given the best possible start in life. That requires different skills around commissioning, collaborative working as well as an ability to see the bigger picture, explains Cllr Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Learning and Skills.
