Local government detected £ 178m fraud last year, according to the Audit Commission's annual report - down 1% on last year. However, the figures show detection is patchy, with just over three-quarters of the fraud unearthed by just one-quarter of councils. The number of fraud cases was down 14%, from 124,000 in 2011/12 to 107,000 in 2012/13. Chairman of the Audit Commission, Jeremy Newman, said the sector should celebrate the results. 'Most of the non-benefit fraud was identified by the top quarter of councils, which lead the way in the fight against fraud,' he said. 'This shows what can be achieved and we encourage all councils to play their part and do as much as they can to detect fraud.
