The development of the Colchester Garrison - associated with the town for two centuries - is nothing less than a model for future Ministry of Defence partnering with civilian authorities, says Garrison commander Colonel Tony Barton. 'It's a welcome development for the soldiers and their families to have living conditions right for the 21st century and the project will be providing something significant for Colchester,' he says. 'It is also a commitment by the MoD to Colchester for 35 years and provides a home for a unique brigade within the British Army.' Up to now some of the soldiers serving in the 16th Air Assault Brigade - which includes the Parachute Regiment - have been living seven to a dormitory. New accommodation now being built gives every soldier their own en-suite facilities.
