I take issue with The MJ editor Michael Burton's statement that 'we may know the problem' relating to the fact that most councillors are white, middle class and male ('Only 3% of council members are BMEs says latest census', The MJ, 15 January). The implication is that there must be a way of forcing an increase in the mix. But does it matter? Do we insist that 50% of our rubbish is collected by women every fortnight? Of course not. Do we similarly insist that x% of librarians are lesbians?
