Exclusive: Haringey's Road To Rehab

Almost four months after the Baby P case which trashed its reputation in a hundred tabloid headlines, Haringey LBC is set on the road back to rehabilitation. It chose The MJ for its first interview with national media since the Baby P story blew up last November and December. And it selected the interview this week to announce a new external advisory board to monitor children's services with seven members, including Hackney LBC mayor, Jules Pipe, himself no stranger to rebuilding a council's reputation. The timing is apposite. While staff and residents are Haringey's first concerns, it is dear that its handling of the Baby P case also impacted negatively on the wider reputation of local government which the council wants to address. Haringey has also recognised that other local authorities, albeit as 'critical friends', are potentially part of the solution to its problems.
