Sir Bob defends authorities' 'value for money' spending

Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) permanent secretary Sir Bob Kerslake this week defended the financial accountability of local authorities in front of an influential Parliamentary spending watchdog. Giving evidence to the Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on 30 June, Sir Bob said investment in the local accountability system should have assuaged MPs concerns over value for money. He told the panel of MPs a series of probity and safeguarding measures -including strengthening Section 151 officers' responsibilities, local audit and scrutiny arrangements and transparency laws, all gave strong assurances about local government's ability to guarantee careful spending.
