In March, David Lammy, minister for culture, launched Love Libraries, a campaign initiated by the Reading Partners consortium. When he declared his love, he was joined by a host of literary celebrities such as Phillip Pullman, Jeffrey Archer, Melvyn Bragg and John Sergeant. It's not often we get high-profile media darlings to proclaim their love for local services. Maybe councils should ride this wave and start promoting libraries as a way of increasing their popularity. With local elections coming up, how refreshing it would be if candidates mounted an appeal based on their commitment to the free availability of exciting new books.
