Casey: Whitehall's knife crime strategy 'inadequate'

'Inadequate' Government leadership and funding is hindering councils in tackling knife crime, a former Whitehall tsar has said. Speaking to the Home Affairs Committee this week, former victims' commissioner and architect of the Troubled Families programme, Dame Louise Casey said: T think the Government's strategy is woefully inadequate. What it is doing at the moment is not a match for the people out there doing bad. We have a lack of leadership at the centre.' The rise in knife crime has been attributed to gang culture and the rise of County Lines drugs operations. Dame Louise said: 'This isn't a disease that's natural - there are nasty, predatory, criminal people behind it that want the disease to spread. 'There has to be prevention rather than cure. '[In the past] every time enforcement was used, support was put in place. All of that has gone. We have dismantled all the structures that knit those things together. 'Local government is a key player in that,' Dame Louise continued.
