Georgia-Pacific WI Mill Celebrates 115 Years

The Green Bay, Wisconsin mill of Atlanta, Georgia based Georgia-Pacific recently threw a birthday party celebrating 115 years. Originally the Northern Tissue Paper Mill, the . plant on Green Bay's north side opened on March 29, 1901, and continues to operate to this day. The mill was started by seven Wisconsin men who pooled $70,000 to build the plant. In its first year, the mill employed 25 people and shipped 800 tons of sanitary tissue. The tissue took its name from the company, Quilted Northern, a brand, which continues to be sold today.Today, the mill produces 70,000 tons of paper each year and employs 275. Many of its original buildings, such as the gatehouse and main office, remain in use today.
