New York celebrates 115 years with 'Subway Day

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) marked the 115th anniversary of the New York City Subway system with a day of special events on 27 October. This included the operation of a four-car 'Lo-V' train from 1917 between Times Square-42 Street and 96 Street between 12.30 and 16.00. These cars were operated into the early 1960s. The 14.6km (9.1-mile) privately-owned Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) opened on 27 October 1904. The four-track line began at City Hall and ran along the east side of Manhattan to Grand Central, across 42nd Street to Times Square, and up the west side to 145th Street in Harlem. It included 28 stations.
