Technology: The Final Frontier Examining Sound Weapon Technology

The entire area of energy weapons, high energy lasers, and particle beam technology is one that cries out for just such a critical examination, since these systems not only offer considerable promise for the emerging requirements of the armed forces of the next two decades or more, they also represent areas in which considerable research and investment has already been made - with surprising results in some cases. The challenge of trying to cover as broad a waterfront as defence technology in a relatively brief but regular column is knowing how to set the scene in terms of background. Without knowing the current state of the art and acknowledging the way that recent developments provide a springboard for the future, it is impossible to portray the path that further developments are likely to follow - with any degree of accuracy. It is therefore sometimes necessary to look backwards in order to see further forward.
