Abunion, also called hallux valgus, is a deformity (valgus) of the joint of the big toe (hallux). The usual symptom is a bump at the joint that might be accompanied by inflammation, pain, and swelling on the side of the foot. There usually is a genetic predisposition to the problem, but actual bunion symptoms often are a result of wearing improperly fitting shoes. Estimates are that 85 percent of women, and about half of men, wear shoes that are too small. Bunions are more common in women than men.
