Ireland's total active defense forces currently number 10,500 personnel. Service is voluntary, and terms are three years in length. Reserves number 14,875. The Irish Defense Forces (covering all three armed services) is administered by the minister for defense, who is assisted by the Council of Defense (composed of the chief of staff, the adjutant-general, the quartermaster-general, the secretary of the Department of Defense, and the minister of state at the Department of Defense).
