The president is commander in chief of the armed forces. Paraguay's armed forces now total about 10,650, including conscripts, plus a reserve force of 164,500. The paramilitary consists of approximately 14,800. Of 1,678,335 males ages 16-49, 1,409,859 are classified as fit for military service (73,367 reach the military age of 18 yearly). Under a universal conscription system, terms of service are 12 months for the Army and Air Force and 24 months for the Navy.
