The value of this production is projected to reach $94.1 billion. The market for special mission aircraft is concentrated in the United States. Outside the U.S., the high acquisition costs of new special mission aircraft limit their potential market primarily to a few well-funded militaries in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. American prime defense contractors Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed Martin dominate the segment. Demand in other regions of the globe is sporadic. Special mission aircraft are capable of remaining in service for many decades, limiting the size of the replacement market. Some militaries are also more likely to procure used airliners or business jets for conversion into special mission aircraft.
