In learning and developing solutions for the project, the team judged that there were three major problems to overcome. The first was the remoteness of the site. Travel to the site required a five-mile hike up into the mountains, and all needed tools and equipment were hand carried to the site. This requirement drove many design decisions. The second was a communication issue, since the team spoke mostly English with little Spanish, and the locals spoke mostly Q'eqchi' with little Spanish. The third difficulty was the steepness of the east river bank and presence of solid rock under the topsoil. This was turned into an advantage by anchoring the cable into the bedrock.
