One of the largest events at IMS is the Student Paper Competition. This event is tasked with selecting the best student work of the year in the MTT-S. For 2009, 232 student papers were received-approximately 25 percent of all submissions. Each of those papers underwent the regular review process of the Technical Program Committee. Some examples of this year's papers are "Composite Right/Left-Handed Substrate Integrated Waveguide and Half-Mode Substrate Integrated Waveguide," "Tunable Multi-Band Direct Conversion Receiver for Cognitive Radio Systems,"and "A General Methodology for Introducing Structured Nonorthogonal Grids into High-Order Finite-Difference Time-Domain Methods."rnAn increasing amount of research is being devoted to the medical industry. At least one example can be found in the student paper titled, "High Frequency Transcutaneous Transmission Using Stents Configured as a Dipole Radiator for Cardiovascular Implantable Devices." Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) also continue to be a hot research topic, as at least two papers are devoted to this technology: "Miniature RF MEMS Switch Matrices" and "A Capacitively Loaded MEMS Slot Element for Wireless Temperature Sensing of up to 300℃."
