Faraday absorption spectra of the Cs-D_2 line

The absorption spectra of right (r) and left (L) circularly polarized light are measured excluding the Faraday rotation term. The spectra show frequency shifts of the σ~+ and σ~- components. When the magnetic field is parallel to the laser beam, R interacts with σ~- of F_g=3 component and σ~+ of F_g=4 whereas L interacts with σ~+ (F_g= 3) and σ~-(F_g=4). For an antiparallel field, R interacts with σ~+ (F_g=4) and conversely L with σ~-(F_g=3) and σ~+(F_g=4). These effects are clearly observed when the intensities of R and L are different. For the case of equal intensities, the effect of field reversal is not apparent. These phenomena originate in the Larmor precession .
