One Hundredth Year in Publication

Each year for the past 20 years or so, I have attempted to update progress in the finishing industry with the Annual Review in the February issue. These reviews have grown over the years to the extent that they now incorporate a few thousand reference citations and require dozens of pages. How then can I begin to summarize 100 years in a few pages? First, I looked at what others have done in the past in similar circumstances. William Blum, in reporting on 25 years of technical developments in the January 1928 issue of The Metal Industry, stated "Instead of attempting in this brief review to enumerate the specific advances, an effort will be made to give a bird's eye view..." So from my perch high above the scene, I'll look at things as they were in 1903, when Volume 1 was published, and then just take a quick glance every 10 years along the way.
