Various methods are used to strip organic materials such as paint or plastic from metal. Basic categories include chemical, heat, mechanical, and a variety of combinations. Chemicals both hot and cold, pyrolysis ovens, and blasting with abrasives have been used to meet stripping needs. Each method has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Fluidizing medium for cleaning has been used for a number of years but is one of the newer methods available today. Fluidized bed stripping is a combination method. It uses heat and as light mechanical action in a dry medium that assumes the physical properties of a boiling liquid when fluidized to strip organic material from metal.
