On-line monitoring of colour shade stability of multicoloured webs

Colour shade deviations in multicoloured web productions are among the most serious and expensive quality problems even in modern and highly automated production plants. Traditional colorimetry, be it laboratory based or installed online, cannot cope with multicoloured surfaces. This report is on the first installations and experiences gained in field with two colour camera-based monitoring systems operating at the Domo-Besmer carpet plant for more than a year. The new patented ColourBrain technology, which is based on colour vector cluster processing, has been shown to be a reliable and robust instrumentation which not only gives helpful early warnings in case of developing colour shade differences, but also produces a wealth of statistical information which helps to better understand and subsequently improve the different shade-relevant production processes.
