Ten years since the founding of the Holdstock-Piachaud student essay prize

2020 marks 10 years since the founding of the Holdstock-Piachaud Student Essay Prize. Douglas Holdstock (editor 1992-2007) and Jack Piachaud (editor 2005-2009) were influential and inspiring editors of Medicine, Conflict & Survival and this competition has proved to be a very fitting legacy. Both were passionate about engaging students and younger people with the medical peace movement and the prevention of the disastrous health consequences of armed conflict. We are very pleased to include three of the winning essays of the latest competition in this issue. Their subjects are topical but reflect concerns that this journal and its affiliated organizations - International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) and its UK affiliate Medact - have worked on over the years: health and global inequalities, the damaging consequences that sanctions can have for health, and climate change.
