Profile of Or John Cameron MacCallum

This contribution to the 'Lest We Forget' series looks at the life of a Scottish doctor, John Cameron MacCallum, 1883-1957, who became a conscientious objector (CO) in the First World War, suffering repeated terms of imprisonment and a placement of particular hardship on the Home Office Scheme (HOS) for alternative service. Questions were asked in Parliament about the treatment he received and his case became something of a cause celebre. He survived the war and resumed medical practice, working in Edinburgh and Argyllshire.
