Approximately 244,000 tons of lubricants enter the world's oceans each year. Of this figure, 28,000 tons of lubricant enters ports and harbours from stern tubes alone. The mixture of crude oil base stocks and additives (up to 30% of the finished lubricants) can result in persistent, bioaccumu-lative and toxic chemicals entering the marine environment.
