Hile sxisting international regula-tions such as the Safety of Life At Sea Convention and MARPOL Convention are applicable globally, there is no comprehensive governance framework providing for any additional requirements necessary for vessels operating in remote, sensitive, and frequently hazardous polar waters. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has recognized that special requirements are required for Antarctic waters, but these relate purely to operational and accidental discharges from ships.
