Motivations and Methods for Modern Maritime Communications: A Survey of Recent and Emerging Trends

Nearly 25 years ago, a similar article in this journal by Mel Briscoe (1987) brought readers up to date on that day's state of the art in ocean data telemetry. Since then there is much new technology to report in this rapidly evolving field. Rather than include a rehash of the previous article prior to covering what's new, a link has been activated on the MTS Website where the interested reader can review that excellent piece and allow this survey to simply pick up where Mel left off. But first, as you read the other contributions in this year's State of Technology Report, note that a common thread links them together, whether explicitly stated or not. There remains a need for collecting timely and accurate data so well-informed decisions can be made. This is the "Why?" that Zdenka Willis and Laura Griesbauer discuss in their State of Technology commentary on the Integrated Ocean Observing System.
