If an element size of 30 mm (13,399 elements in the FE model of the structure) is used together with the failure strain 45%, as suggested for the 240 steel grade material in section 5.2., the amount of energy absorbed in the structure as well as the distance until failure of the fractured components occurs, are greatly overestimated; see Fig. 15. Additionally, the structural members do not follow the deformation, buckling, and fracture behavior that was observed in the tests.
