While it's true that implementing shore-side software can lead to efficiency gains in the workboat industry, one of the challenges faced by companies today is being able to manage the increasing amount of data and communication internal departments and external customers require from vessels.Florida Marine Transporters is one such company that was going through the challenge of trying to manage the rising amount of data transfer from their 60 plus vessels on the inland waterways. "Prior to implementing our current onboard system the data we received from our vessels came through in a format that could be printed out, but that's about it," says Don Carlton, Director of IT for Florida Marine Transporters (FMT). "In order to report out that information our billing and dispatch team had to rekey all of it into another computer."
