OIL AND WATER DON'T MIX

Millions of liters of mineral oil-based lubricants enter the world's oceans, bays, harbors and rivers every year through normal vessel operations. A 2010 study estimated that commercial ships may introduce annually as much as 61 million liters of oil through operational discharges. These lubricants and greases are used on everything from cranes to stern tubes to thrusters. The idea behind the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Vessel General Permit program is to mitigate the environmental damage from these mineral oil-based lubricants by switching to Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs).
