GLADDING HEARN TO BUILD PILOT BOAT

Somerset, Ma-Based Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, A Duclos Corporation, has won an order to build a Chesapeake Class pilot boat for Alabama Pilot, Inc., Mobile, AL. The all-aluminum pilot boat will feature a C. Raymond Hunt-designed Deep V hull. It will be 53 ft 6 inches long by 17 ft 8 inches wide and will have a 4 ft 8 inches draft. The vessel will be powered by twin Caterpillar C-18 diesel engines, each delivering 671 bhp at 2,100 rev/min and turning five-bladed NiBrAl propellers via Twin Disc MGX-5135A Quickshift gears enabling the vessel to have a top speed of 25 knots.
