The maritime training landscape is changing at a rate of knots, with the merchant fleet demanding more versatile maritime training regimes. As a result the sector is looking to bolster its fire fighting capability and is turning to the military sector for inspiration. Opened in 2001, the £20M Portsmouth Fire School, part of a triumvirate of RN fire schools that includes Plymouth and Strathclyde, managed by Flagship Ltd, and marketed to the commercial sector, lays claim to being one of the most technologically advanced fire training operations in the world. The facility houses eight 'hot' units, a 50-seat demonstration area and multi-role search, rescue and hose handling areas. Fully equipped classrooms are located in the purpose built Phoenix NBCD School adjacent to the fire school at Whale Island, Portsmouth, in the UK.
