F125 Steaming On

As the engine room of the German F125 frigates start to take shape, MTU, RENK and Siemans have all been asked to contribute their technology towards the onboard power generation and propulsion system Fur ther to a news piece in last month's MER regarding Siemen's commitments, MTU has since been awarded the contract to equip all German navy Class F125 frigates with diesel gensets and gas turbines. MTU, which is part of the Tognum Group, will provide four diesel gensets and one gas turbine per vessel for propulsion and on-board power generation. The MTU 20V 4000 M53B engine will generate 3015kW and combined, the four gensets will produce a total of 12 060kW (16 400HP) giving a cruising speed of 20kts by generating electricity for on-board power and the diesel-electric propulsion system.
