摘要

I here was a heartening call in my local newspaper the other day from Sir James Dyson, who was encouraging engineers to produce some innovative ideas to make our water go rather further. The fact that this call to arms by innovators came while flood warnings were being issued here in the UK should not deflect us from the main thrust of his argument. While the meteorologists and environmentalists wring their hands about 'climate change' and the prospect of water shortages, it will be, as he infers, innovative engineers who devise the solutions to the problems. These range from working out how to distribute this island's share of rainfall more efficiently to reducing its waste in every household.
