A response to getting real on marine careers (MFR June 2012)

Dear editor, I am in total agreement that . the days of the career seagoing engineer are over and time spent at sea must most usefully be viewed as a matchless foundation for other careers in the wider marine industry. However, I worry whether Michael Grey's experiences of trips to sea are relevant enough to today's shipboard life to hope that a seagoing career could last anywhere near 7-12 years. I am concerned that the vast majority of youngsters coming into the industry will not want to pursue this highly rewarding career beyond their cadetship - or even finish it.
