Homing pigeons are renowned for having a good sense of direction, something to do with an internal compass that picks up the Earth's magnetic field. But Scuttlebutt is beginning to question how they earned their stripes in light of a spate of incidents of pigeons losing their way out at sea. One racing pigeon was airlifted back to dry land after it was found resting on an oil rig. The bird, named Pedro, was found 160 miles off the North Sea coast on the Clyde platform. He was eventually flown by helicopterto a veterinary near Falkirk where he has made a 'good recovery'.
