It must be very frustrating, if not downright disappointing, to have completed a cadetship, passed written and oral examinations with flying colours, but then spend month after month trying to find a shipping company to take you on. Many were persuaded to train as deck or engineer officers in the expectation that shipping is crying out for new talent. Even today, everyone from Marcus Bowman, the president of the UK Chamber of Shipping, downwards is emphasising the importance of well-trained and qualified young people to maintain the onward march of this essential industry.
