More than 100 years ago, the National Confectioners Association was formed to lobby for the installation of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to bring consistent quality and safety standards across the industry. To this day, candymak-ers in the United States are still subject to FDA's quality and safety regulations and NCA still closely tracks FDA developments. An awareness of new and impending rules can save a candy company from engaging directly with the agency. Based on recent statements by top FDA officials and the agency's proposed 2012 budget (still under review by Congress, along with the rest of the federal budget), FDA's top priority is implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). However, the agency has also focused on several new nutrition-labeling initiatives to support First Lady Michelle Obama's focus on healthy lifestyles, including addressing front-of-pack-age labeling and updating the Nutrition Facts Panel.
