Rosalind Candy Castle celebrates 100 years

Rosalind Candy Castle celebrates its 100th anniversary this fall. The company is located in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, close to Pittsburgh. Company founder Gust Zachos immigrated to the United States from Greece in 1912 and opened a restaurant with a soda fountain in Freedom, Pennsylvania. He had worked with his relatives in Greece making candy. During the slow periods in his restaurant he returned to practicing that art and started making chocolates. The candy part of his business grew quickly. In 1914 he decided to hold a contest to name his business. The result was Rosalind Candy Castle. The candy store and restaurant was then moved to Brighton Avenue in Rochester, Pennsylvania. Zachos began to make more types of chocolate confections. Soon the candy business was growing faster than the restaurant business, necessitating another move, this time to 11th Street in New Brighton, Pennsylvania.
