Mountain railways have a fascination all their own, and none more so than the busy and efficient rack lines that, every day, power trains up and down the marvellous Rigi mountain in Central Switzerland. The Rigi is known as "The Queen of the Mountains".The 1800 metre high mountain dominates the lake of Luzern, and also the lake of Zug. The views from all of its sides are spectacular, looking out over lakes and mountains and small Swiss towns. It is accessible by foot, and because of its beauty has been admired and visited by tourists for hundreds of years, indeed the first mention of the Rigi in public records was in 1353. Tourists and pilgrims visited the Rigi from the 17th century, and hotels were built to accommodate them.
