The name L.D. Porta may be widely known but, generally, very little detail is really known about his work. This short article is intended to be the first of many highlighting some of the less well known projects he was involved with and also to cast some light on details of those which are relatively well known. First and foremost Porta was a steam railway locomotive development engineer but it is not widely known that he worked with steam away from the railways. Naturally much of what he had developed for railway operation served as the basis for his steam work in what could be termed wider industry. One such group of projects entailed various steam powered machines able to generate electricity, provide direct mechanical power, process steam and so on.
