It's hard to imagine that a high-end retail mall can gain the same attraction as its highly popular neighbors Universal Studios and Disney World, but Orlando's new Mall at Millenia is more than holding its own. With exciting features throughout the mall such as a multimedia grand court and winter and water gardens, each with unique lighting treatments, consumers have been flocking to the distinctive shopping destination since its grand opening on October 18, 2002. Paul Gregory, Brett Anderson and JR Krauza, of Focus Lighting worked with JPRA Architects to create a theme based on the universe, earth and time, featuring water, landscape, art, graphics and variable imaging, augmented by graphics, illumination and video techniques. They were rewarded with an Award of Excellence at the 2003 International Illumination Design Awards (IIDA) program. The challenge was to create a unique look and feel for each of the spaces, yet maintain a commonality throughout the long concorses of the mall. What follows is a look at the lighting approach for each area of the mall.
