摘要

What are the must-have skills for tomorrow's John Q (or Jane Q) Lighting Professional? If one were to draw up a wish list of characteristics for those just entering the field or early in their careers, what would be on it? To help us build Mr. and Ms. Right, LD + A asked four lighting professionals―a panel comprised of an educator, a veteran practitioner and two young designers―the following question: "If you were to create a portrait of the prototypical lighting designer for the next generation, what key skills and attributes would that person possess?" While their perspectives differ somewhat, several common themes did emerge: 1. Technical competency is job one. The roundtable agreed that the discussion starts here. "It's what we hang our hat on," says one. 2. Communication skills are vital. Panelists emphasized an assortment of skills, ranging from the ability to educate clients on the value of good lighting, to communication within the project team, proposal writing and even the art of taking meeting minutes and leaving cogent voicemail messages. 3. Education is a journey, not a destination. Be it certification or other forms of professional development, continuing education should be viewed as a lifelong experience.
