摘要

This is the story of a good memory from November 22,1963. It's the story of the forgotten hours from that day-JFK's morning speeches in Fort Worth, TX-before the trip to Dallas. And it's a story told both in President Kennedy's words and in glass, granite, bronze, water and light. The story begins and ends on the southeast corner of Main and 8th Street, near the hotel where President Kennedy stayed that Friday morning. In that spot today is the JFK Tribute, conceived as a celebration of the themes-international leadership, ambition in the sciences, defense, a strong economy and Fort Worth's role in history-that the president touched on during the two speeches. Note that the location is called a tribute, not a memorial. "We were told very early by donors not to use that word," says Jered Wid-mer, associate principal of The Lighting Practice, Philadelphia, who earned a 2013 IES Illumination Award of Merit for his work. "They wanted a 'tribute' that honors achievements in life, not a 'memorial' that recognizes someone's death." That distinction led some local residents to this street corner in Fort Worth, ratherthan to Dallas, on the 50th anniversary of the assassination. "This was the last good memory," one history buff told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
