The Tyne & Wear Metro's Tynemouth station, built in 1882, is to receive a GBP2m grant from the UK Government for conservation work. The funding will provide for the repair and restoration of the historic roof canopies plus enhancement of existing exhibition space. Tynemouth has been part of the Metro network since the system opened in 1981 and more recently it has been placed on the English Heritage 'at risk' register.
