Final go-ahead given for first phase of Liege tram

The construction permit for the new tramway in Liege, Belgium (initially 12.5km/7.8 miles from Standard to Coronmeuse, with 21 stops) was issued on 17 February; the construction consortium for a 30-year public private partnership contract is due to be announced shortly so that major work can begin in October. Utility diversion started on 24 February. A condition of the permit is that a surface contact system is installed between General Leman and Blonden in the city centre near Liege-Guillemins station. An unusual aspect of the operation between Place Saint-Lambert and Place des Deportes will be Sunday closure of the eastbound track along the river quay (where there is a regular market) with single-track operation on the other track.
