摘要

The fruits of historians from several disciplines in the Rhones-Alpes region of France, these twenty-three essays seek to present the history of libraries at a time when they were forming a kind of Patrimoine livresque. Not all owners read their books, and not all libraries are set out in an orderly fashion; but they represent landscapes that can always be adjusted, and that are re-figured when collections are dispersed. The distinction between what is collected (or accumulated), often influenced as much by political or even military constraints as by personal choice, and what is read, is all the more important to remember when so much attention is currently being paid to the history of reading. These papers concentrate on French, Italian, and Spanish-speaking countries, and are based on contributions to two colloquia: a further paper, on an English topic, is omitted. Frederic Barbier on the Thirty Years War sets the chronological and to some extent political scene, themes followed by Pedro Rueda Ramirez and Andrea de Pasquale on more detailed political circumstances affecting the circulation of books in Spain and her colonies and in Savoie. Several contributors are concerned with individual libraries, including Marie-Pierre Laffitte on Colbert, Raphaele Mouren on Piero Vettori (following up her 2.014 book on Vettori, published by Gamier), Anna-Maria Raugei on de Thou and the Dupuys, Christian del Vento on Alfieri, Eleonora Barria-Poncet on Montesquieu, Ugo Rozzo on the Milanese Settala collection and (less familiar ground) Adeline Rege on the library of the eighteenth-century architect Simon-Louis Du Ry, Alain Henriot and Pierre Voisin on the reading notes kept by Charles-Andre d'Allois d'Herculais (d. 1808), and Gilles Bertrand and Beatrice Kalfoun on Francois-Marie de Vaulserre in the Dauphine. Andrea Bruschi and Dominique Varry focus on the sales of the Baluze and La Valliere libraries respectively. Much of this is unavoidably piecemeal, but it all adds substantially to the building blocks from which a larger perspective will one day be assembled.
