The alpha male is the hero of choice for many of today's romance novelists (e.g., Jayne Anne Krentz, Lynn Kerstan, Susanne Simmons, Jo Beverley, Amanda Scott, Penelope Williamson, Linda Howard, Elizabeth Lowell, and Christine Feehan). Strong, determined, protective, and not always politically correct, he is a man accustomed to being in charge. This is not to say that he is necessarily rude, mean, or cruel; he usually is not, although he is often strong and dangerous enough to pose a physical threat to the heroine (and to anyone else who might harm her). He is also magnetic and seductive enough to be an emotional risk. In other words, the alpha male is exactly the hero whom a strong heroine needs: a man worth fighting, fighting for, and winning—he is, by far, her greatest challenge.
