Francine Fialkoff called for the American Library Association (ALA) to take a stronger stand against the privatization of library services ("The Privatization Threat," Editorial, LJ6/1/08, p. 8). In fect, the association has taken a strong stand. In 2001, we adopted a "Resolution on the Privatization of Publicly Funded Libraries," which has become the association's policy on this issue. This policy states,rnALA affirms that publicly funded libraries should remain directly accountable to the publics they serve. Therefore, the American Library Association opposes the shifting of policy making and management oversight of library services from the public to the private for-profit sector.rnALA believes that there is a significant difference between outsourcing selected services and outsourcing a library as a whole. A hired gun from outside won't know the community the way those who live there and work in its library will. This is the most important reason not to privatize.
